Significant stress early in life leads to stronger responses to cocaine in adults than those who had not endured high levels of stress. Those with a serious history of abuse took in more cocaine, took it faster and didn’t stop.
Changes in the brain are responsible for this out of control and self-destructive behavior.
In stressed children, dopamine, the brain’s reward neurotransmitter, was significantly increased in the area behind the forehead which is the very same area that is impacted by Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The combination of ADHD and significant stress in children set them up for drug use.
Treat the ADHD, get support at home and school for problem behaviors to avoid child abuse.
Reduce stress in your ADHD child to create a better adult life.
