We’re now realizing that learning to read is like a fingerprint. Every kid does it differently. Research about how to teach reading is exploding because illiteracy is related to crime and causes significant human misery. Learning the names of letters and mastering the sounds that letters make are critical, but where do you go from there when introducing reading to your toddler? Vocabulary. Without vocabulary, reading has no meaning. How do you teach vocabulary to a toddler? Begin building vocabulary using books with one large picture on each page and say the word. Children don’t look at the written word until they’re actually ready to read, so don’t bother yet with teaching them to read words. Got lots of books with a few pictures on each page? Cut a “window” out of poster board and show one picture at a time. Baby’s vocabulary will soar! Claudia Join me on Facebook at Dr. Claudia McCulloch. When I talked with a digital security expert about keeping kids safe online, he indicated that it’s about consistency and keeping up with technology. Parents need to stop browsing for the latest gossip and learn as much as they can about how kids get around your best intentions in order to access online content. The predators work hard to find ways to engage and record your kids. He shared that most parents have no idea how to monitor devices remotely. They need to be consistent in tracking all correspondence from Skype to direct messaging or WeChat. Parents need to stop showing the world photos of their kids and talking about them. Parents should maintain very strong privacy settings. Screen time should be limited and parents need to have passwords and access to all accounts on all devices. If a predator gets to your kids, it’s because you didn’t know how to prevent it. Claudia Join me on Facebook at Dr. Claudia McCulloch. |
