The only thing that everything has is a name.
When you consider a name for your child, think about the nickname that may arise from it. Nicknames given by family and friends tend to last a lifetime.
If “Little Ray” is a bartender, then fine, but it’s not gonna work if he’s a dentist. Think about how Danny, Joey or Frankie is going to “fit” him when he’s a 6 foot 2 stockbroker who’s the father of three boys.
Children have a tendency to live up to their names and if their names have a childish sound to them, how might that impact their lives? Will it shape how Mikey sees himself?
Clearly, it’s up to you as parents to give them their names, but you might want to stick with the name you gave them and see if they want a nickname as they grow older. That way, it’s their choice. You may find a struggle with grandparents who persist with using nicknames and it may just have to be that way!
Ask Dan if it’s OK that Grandma calls him Danny. He may not mind!
