When a teacher sits next to a child and helps him through a math problem, he is “renting” the teacher’s neurology as well as her knowledge.
It’s the same dynamic with emotional challenges. When you’re in pain and facing overwhelming or even minor problems, “renting” the emotional stability and problem solving competence of a healthy friend, pastor or therapist will help you work through the issues more quickly and competently. The goal isn’t to emerge unscathed, but to emerge a bit wiser with stronger coping skills.
Notice I said “Rent”, not lease. Friends and family can be counted on for support in short bursts, but if your challenges require more than bursts, hire a therapist.
Learn to manage your life more competently to avoid problems and to feel confident.
