Babies born 10 weeks early have abnormal connections in the brain networks responsible for attention and emotional functioning. These areas don’t work together to focus on goals or regulate emotions.
It might be the case these children had brain issues in the womb and their diagnoses had nothing to do with being born early. The problems might be triggered by stress, illness or toxic exposure.
How do we fix this? Improving diet and reducing stress and toxic exposures are the first steps.
Early and intensive therapies for newborns and “homework” for mothers are essential to optimize baby’s development.
It’s critical to monitor academic performance and social functioning so interventions can take place quickly. It’s all about the head start.
