Anything this important needs a written agreement.
While an agreement can’t protect David from serious mistakes, any steps you can take to minimize risk are worth taking.
The contract should outline David's home and school conduct, expected academic performance and rules for passengers.
- David shouldn’t lend the car to anyone even if he’s been drinking.
- If he's impaired, he should call you.
- If he gets into a car with an impaired driver, the same rules apply.
- If he can’t reach you, he needs to call a taxi or a ride-share service.
Negotiate other relevant points including washing the car, buying gas and helping with insurance which is very costly, indeed, for teenage males.
Consider buying an umbrella policy that may cover expenses that exceed auto and homeowner insurance. Good luck out there!
