Step-parenting is often not a positive situation at the beginning. Is this because stepfathers use harsh discipline with their stepchildren and that stepmothers are likely to have serious conflicts with their stepdaughters?
It’s got to be scary to join a family with hopes of love and affection only to be seen as the person who keeps Mom and Dad from getting back together.
But, what if your new parent is really great and everyone is happier? You’re still left with those old labels. Let’s change that.
The term “bonus” dad or “bonus” mom (or any "bonus" family member) introduces a new parent or relative to your friends and school in a much more positive and friendly way. After all, a “bonus” is usually a prize, gift or reward. It’s a good thing!
Just a little something to consider. You don't have to do "what's always been done". You can make a change and create a new family with more positive "titles". Give it a try!
Just do the best you can, Claudia
