Now, think about Brian’s grades. Grades represent the work that is counted.
Unfortunately, the fact that Brian is a responsible guy who always does his best, cooperates with family, is respectful to teachers and kind to classmates doesn’t seem to be factored into his grades. But, these behaviors count for so much more in real life.
I have students with serious learning disabilities and other challenges who come to me to be evaluated. Even with a lot of help, their best effort earns them Cs.
Once I explain to them the cause of their grades and focus on their behaviors that will lead them to being successful adults, they relax. I explain Einstein’s quote. They get it.
We talk about their dreams and realistic options for the future. They relax. They know they’ve got what is “really takes” to be independent. It’s not about the grades.
