You’ve slapped on sunscreen all your life. You’re confident they’re safe and that the FDA has researched these products extensively. You’re wrong.
Only recently has the FDA been questioning the safety of photoprotective chemicals. Do they mess with hormones, give you cancer or damage a fetus?
As it turns out, it takes only a few minutes for the chemicals in sunscreen to get into your blood, but don’t panic yet. There’s no evidence that they harm you, but we just don’t know.
Recent research tells us that the concentrations of these chemicals do rise to a level that triggers the need for further testing.
We do know that sun exposure causes cancer, so until we have definitive answers, stick to those formulations that have been proven to be both safe and effective.
Products with zinc oxide and titanium oxide are the safest.
