Marijuana use among American adults has more than doubled since 2001 due to shifts in laws and attitudes.
In 2013, nearly 10% of adults smoked regularly. The greatest increases have been among women, blacks and Hispanics, middle-aged and older adults and those living in the South.
Many states now legally sell medical marijuana and basically anyone can get a prescription. Several states have legalized it for medical use.
We have no idea about the impact of pot on family functioning, but we do know that the devastation of alcohol abuse led to Prohibition and the creation of Alcoholics Anonymous.
This just may be one of those large-scale social science experiments to see how it all goes. There are likely to be unintended consequences.
Families are under significant stress as it is, will using marijuana help or harm? Approach with caution.
