Some women are delaying motherhood, some are infertile, and, some will be undergoing treatment for serious diseases and are freezing their eggs in order to have children later.
As a result, more and more women are using in-vitro fertilization to conceive, but there are risks.
Studies involving 8 million children indicated that in-vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies are associated with a higher rate of autism, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, cerebral palsy and genetic disorders.
It’s not the case that IVF causes these problems, only that they occur together.
Still, it’s important to do your research and have a frank conversation with your doctor about your concerns.
Talk to your doctor, as well, about the role that having twins or triplets may play in increasing the risk of autism, language processing disorders and intellectual disabilities.
