In America’s schools, the senior year has been based on the 19th century premise that 80% of students would return to the farm. Obviously, that’s no longer the case.
By the time kids reach their senior year, they’ve had it with school. Their lack of focus and difficulties making decisions appear in the fall and by spring, they’ve succumbed to dreaded senioritis.
Both high achievers and kids who struggle suffer the same. Seniors feel entitled to down time.
Many districts realize the senior year is a waste of time. So, they offer dual enrollment program in colleges or internships.
The second semester of the senior year is a waiting room for the next stage of life and it’s ripe for bad behavior.
More than 50% of college freshman require remedial coursework once they’re in college.
Perhaps more time can be spent making sure that students are actually prepared for college instead of wasting time.
The senior year could be an opportunity for internships or volunteerism that would give them opportunities to see the work, the "real work" on a daily basis. Most of us know that the job we work bares little resemblance to the one we were taught to do.
