Have you ever wondered about the great men and women of history and if they lived today, would have been diagnosed with “something”? Leonardo da Vinci might have had Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Despite being a prolific painter, sculptor, engineer, architect and inventor, many of his ideas couldn’t be created because they were well ahead of the science of his time. Though records show he spent an excessive amount of time planning, he struggled mightily to finish anything. He was restless and couldn’t stick to one thing at a time. He was a chronic procrastinator. He rarely slept, was insatiably curious and highly distractible. But, the ADHD may have allowed him to think freely and may have contributed to his accomplishments. If he had more “stick-to-it-iveness”, how many more of his pieces would be hanging in galleries! Claudia Join me on Facebook at Dr. Claudia McCulloch. Image by Thomas Budach from Pixabay Depression can shorten your life span and it’s not due to suicide. A 60-year study of a large group of adults revealed the importance of treating depression when it occurs. Adults at the highest risk for premature death were those who had just experienced a depressive event. People with multiple depressive episodes during the study were also at the highest risk. Treating the disorder itself increases the odds of survival. Health risks such as poor diet, smoking, drinking to excess and being inactive occur with depression. How much shorter could your life be? It depends on your gender, but the range is 7 to 18 years. Depressed men were much more likely to die, but both groups evened out at 51% by the end of the study. The risk of depression drops over time, so get it treated, stay as healthy as possible and be aware of the risks. Claudia Join me on Facebook at Dr. Claudia McCulloch. Frequently, we hear people talk about someone’s “energy”. It’s not just a way of describing how you feel about someone. The discipline of bioenergy is now being studied intensely. Scientists have discovered that plants draw on other plants to support their own life force. It’s a proof of concept that perhaps humans can draw this force from others in the same way. Humans’ physical bodies absorb the vibrations in the environment and avoiding emotionally toxic places is important to your overall health. Our emotional states require a lot of power and so, we tend to suck up the forces in our environment which either energizes us or triggers stress and the release of cortisol. You feel the negativity, but can’t explain the reasons for it. You don’t have to. When negativity enters your space, center yourself and move away. Ever have a person in your life who leaves you exhausted? Yeah, it’s like that. Claudia Join me on Facebook at Dr. Claudia McCulloch. The FDA has approved a blood test to measure concussions and quickly identify brain injuries. This test may replace CT scans in about 30% of people with suspected brain trauma. Every year, there are about 3 million ER visits related to brain injury. Nearly 50,000 of those people die. Concussion is tricky to diagnose because in some, symptoms can show up right away and in others, they take hours or days to appear. When concussions occur, the brain releases proteins into the bloodstream and can be detected within 12 hours of the trauma. Specific protein levels can predict which patients have brain injury and which ones don’t. Using this blood test may reduce second-impact syndrome. This occurs when the first concussion isn’t resolved and another impact leads to brain swelling and dire consequences. Ask your kids’ football or cheer team if they have access to this technology just in case. Claudia Join me on Facebook at Dr. Claudia McCulloch. |
