Rewards work, but only sometimes.
When you reward a child, even with words, for the things that bring them pleasure, they lose interest. Instead of rewarding them, simply comment. “Wow, Trevor, that’s a great Lego fort” will actually reduce his motivation to build. But, “Wow, Trevor, you really enjoy yourself when you build” will not impact his motivation. When kids know they’ll be rewarded, they spend less time doing even enjoyable things. When they know they won’t get a reward, they actually spend more time and if an unexpected reward is given, their motivation slightly improves. Currently, our society celebrates kids for every little thing. This practice may backfire on us and create a generation that’s always waiting for the reward. In real life, this doesn’t happen. Be careful how you reinforce your kids. Remember what Einstein said, “Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts”. The more attractive you are and the more similar you are to the person you’re trying to influence, the more they’ll want to follow you.
If you’re rewarded for behavior, your ability to influence others is even more powerful. Think about this when moving your kids toward a behavior. If you present yourself as “put together”, you’re better able to get your kids to go along with your ideas. If they see themselves as being similar to you, bingo, they’re more on board. If you and your child aren’t a “good fit”, you’re less likely to influence them. Samantha is high strung and emotional and you aren’t, so she thinks you don’t understand her and your influence is weaker. If your kids watch you benefit from telling a white lie, they’re going to imitate you no matter how many times you tell them not to. It’s that old “do as I say, not as I do” stuff where you demand that your children behave at a higher level than you do! If you smoke and booze it up, they’ll follow along! A few Halloween-related fun things: 1. Cheesecake Factory offering some goodies. Here they are! Come and get it! 2. Here's how to slow-down the rate of rot in your pumpkin! 3. We talked about the fun Hocus Pocus costumes that are available and the amusing drinking game that someone created. You need to watch the movie and play along. And no, it doesn't have to be booze. You can play along with hot chocolate or spiced cider!! Of course you can put hot chocolate in a shot glass! So fun! Here are the fabulous new Lego pop-up books that you can build!! Do I see these under the tree this year?? Lyft, Lime and Uber are offering free and discounted rides to polling stations on election day. NO NO NO excuses! Get out and vote! Here's what you need to know. Yep, it's coming around again! The Titanic II will set sail in 2020. Of course, this time, there will be life boats for all! Isn't that special? It will be sailing to China and Dubai. Australian businessman, Clive Palmer, has been working on this for years. Here's what's going on. Usually, it's the summer where I tell the most hilarious/ridiculous wedding stories, but these two really take the wedding cake. Check them out. Story 1. This is the story of fire and love. Story 2. This is the story of love and competition. OY! This is really scaring me now. I had a haunting suspicion that the CDC would "up" the estimates on acute flaccid myelitis and my worse suspicions have been manifested. There are more than twice than first estimated. Just this week, a mother put her sick 2-year old toddler to bed and when the little girl awoke in the morning, she was paralyzed from the neck down. The CDC doesn't know what's causing it and there's no cure. Please, please inform yourselves. This article tells a bit more, but if I had a young child, I'd be all over the CDC website everyday. Here's the direct link to the listing of information on the CDC's website as of today. This is the home page of the CDC where there is a section devoted to AFM. Have the best Halloween ever and I hope all of the candy you get is your "flavorite" (that's a word my Dad made up! It's perfect!!).
