When I was in practice, I frequently gave a lecture called, Ten Ways to Destroy a Child. It was standing room only always.
Here are the ten ways. For more, read the article of the same name at DrClaudia.net.
One. Repeat yourself when giving information to your kids.
Two. Screaming instead of making assertive statements with a strong voice.
Three. Doing things for your kids they should be doing for themselves.
Four. One parent puts the responsibility on the other.
Five. Demean each other in front of the kids.
Number six of the ten ways to destroy a child. Parents let the kids make them feel guilty.
Seven. Giving your child money instead of having an allowance.
Eight. Arguing with your child.
Nine. Getting involved in sibling skirmishes.
Ten. Hitting your kids.
Quite the ugly list, isn’t it? We all do some of these things in a moment of weakness. Monitor yourself and make changes. Practice, practice, practice. Don't try, try, try.
