Have you ever heard yourself say, “I didn’t consider that”?
What’s actually happening here is that you don’t know what you don’t know. It’s a failure of imagination. You couldn’t imagine it, so you couldn’t consider it.
The greatest mysteries have been solved by people whose imaginations led them to ask questions that no one else did.
Einstein, for example, was educated at a time when experts were never to be questioned. He dared to question.
One of his most famous quotes is “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution”.
I suppose this is one of the reasons why he recommended that parents read fairy tales to their children.
Fairy tales give kids permission to use their imaginations and if they were encouraged to imagine, they were likely to strengthen their “questioning muscles”!
