Competent people feel secure and confident. They perceive themselves coping well with challenges. Don’t even think about sending your 18 year old out into the world without teaching him the basics.
You have to start early. Yes, 3 year olds can have chores. They can put the toys in the toy box and 5 year olds can wipe up spills and feed the pets.
Kids who are 7 can make salad and match up socks and 8 year olds can load the dishwasher and put groceries away.
Your 10-year old can vacuum, clean bathrooms and make simple meals.
Kids 12 and up can do advanced chores such as laundry, grocery shopping, watching younger kids and making a complete meal.
Dear Abby said it all, “If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders”. Perfect.
Keep up the good work! Claudia
