In elementary school, kids tend to have same-sex friendships, but early in adolescence, they start having friends of the opposite sex.
Girls who start hanging out with boys much earlier than their peers are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol later in adolescence than those girls who delayed having friendships with boys.
Girls who physically mature early are likely to come to the attention of boys who introduce them to drugs and alcohol or make it a condition of their relationship.
If Melissa is maturing early and boys are giving her attention, help her understand the reasons behind the interest.
Be honest with her about the consequences of early involvement with boys.
Help Melissa develop her mind and interests toward a brighter future. Maintain a warm and nurturing relationship where she can come to you with any question.
