The mistakes you made are not their business. What is important is that you deliver a strong message against cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs.
Of course, if you are drinking, smoking and blowing weed currently, the message will not be convincing. It is convincing if you live the choices you preach. If you express regret over having indulged, your children will not have as strong an anti-drug position then if you did not tell them. So go ahead.
Tell them the negative consequences of using. Tell them exactly how you will handle it if you find out they are using. Write up a statement of consequences for them to sign.
Considering that the timeline from recreational use to dependence and abuse is only 3 months, I doubt that you’d be willing to lose your kid to drugs by taking a soft and friendly approach.
