Now, we know that they can sniff out cancer, tell us when we're about to have a diabetic episode, calm us when we have anxiety, protect us at home and in war and they only ask for love and care in return.
There are many decisions to make before getting a dog. A puppy? An older dog? What breed? Which family member will be the primary caregiver? What are the needs of the dog? Lots of exercise? A calm cuddler? What's the family's personality? Will the dog be left alone all day while everyone is at work/school? Do you have space for a dog?
Once these decisions are made, are there young ones who need to be prepared for the arrival of the dog? Here are some resources to guide you with your kids.

A little girl gets a French Bulldog puppy and their lives are full of adventure.
For kids 3-5. About $13.

The books are generally for kids under the age of 5 and are relatively inexpensive.
Adorable illustrations, easy vocabulary and relatable circumstances.

Created by Ree Drummond who also has a television cooking show featuring her family and ranch.
These books are for kids about the ages of 4 to 8 and run about $15.00. Both fun and meaningful story lines for kids.

This is also a series which allows you to have "go to" gift ideas as well as developing a "relationship" with Harry. So fun!
For ages 4-8, approximately.
Harry's story has been used so many times that if you search "Harry the Dirty Dog teaching activities", you'll see the vocabulary, grammar, comparatives, and story sequencing tasks designed to enhance your child's skills.

The rhythmic verse builds suspense and the "word families" builds reading vocabulary.
For kids about 3-8. About $13.00.

A Dog Wearing Shoes is about a little girl who learns a lesson about being a responsible "pet parent"!
Ages 4-8.

The vibrant colors add to the excitement.
For kids 2-5.

It's my recommendation to read this kind of book before offering it to your child. You want to get as close as possible in "matching" the issues your child is having with the loss and those presented in the book.
For ages 2-5.
