Males and females with anorexia obsess over their weight, have irrational fears of gaining weight and have a distorted perception of their bodies. They see fat where there is none. They achieve their low weight through restricting food intake, fasting, excessive exercising or using diet pills.
The binge-eating/purging type includes those who eat excessive amounts of food and then vomit, use laxatives or other medication to prevent weight gain. They feel out of control when it comes to food.
Depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive and bipolar disorders frequently occur with anorexia.
Weight loss isn’t the only sign of anorexia. Educate yourself and pay attention to your children’s weight loss.
