“Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere”. Bingo! That’s the essence of it all and Albert Einstein knew it. He understood that the ability to “dream up stuff” is everything.
Considering the entire realm of possibilities is the essence of genius.
How do we encourage imagination? Einstein’s approach involved fairy tales. “If you want your children to be intelligent”, he said, “read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales”.
Fairy tales and stories of fantasy like Harry Potter spark the imagination and encourage children to be creative and gives them permission to let their minds soar.
It helps them to make unique connections between concepts which could lead to inventions or cures!
I saw a program about NASA's repair of the Hubble. At the very, very end, when the credits were rolling, the interviewer asked the man in charge of the repair just one more question. He asked, "What would have happened if you couldn't fix it?" He answered, "I would have been accused of a failure of imagination".
Yes, that's it. He would have been accused of being unable to imagine "how" to repair the world's most expensive mirror.
Don’t underestimate the serious benefit of your child’s silly fairy tales.
