Imagine being 18 and being mildly autistic, having ADHD, fetal alcohol syndrome, being language impaired or suffering from an anxiety disorder. Kids with disabilities of any type don’t manage these situations well.
It’s best to get the issue right out there.
I ask parents to create a business-sized card to outline some of the issues the officer may see right away, so they can correctly interpret your teenager’s behavior.
Include parents’ contact information.
When the officer asks for John’s license and registration, he needs to hand the card to the officer.
Police are very well-trained to handle situations involving citizens with disabilities.
A traffic stop can become a very powerful teaching tool for your teen. If your teen is being reckless, you may get a call from the cop for follow-up driver’s training. Every parent would rather hear from a cop than the coroner.
