Mice mommies drank coffee while pregnant and nursing and their babies had serious memory deficits. The part of the brain that stores memories, the hippocampus, actually fired off too many messages and caused mild seizures in that part of the brain.
The reason for this? When brains are growing, neurons, or brain cells travel great distances to find their ultimate home. When mice mommies had caffeine, the neurons traveling to the hippocampus were late to arrive at their final destination. In humans, much of this migration happens after birth.
Maybe caffeine will affect your baby’s memory or it won’t. Control the controllable. You can live without caffeine for 9 months to give your baby the best chance to have a fully functioning life.
