Two areas of the brain are affected.
- The temporal poles are responsible for processing the meaning of words, perspective taking and creating mental images of social situations.
- The orbitofrontal cortex determines the value of expected rewards or punishments. Decision making in light of potential rewards and punishment is critical to the process of trial and error.
Studies are needed to determine if the increased brain activity has long-term health consequences, but why run the risk?
Remind your kids to alternate ears when using their phone and take breaks to give both their brains and phones time to “cool down”.
