My friend lives on a large piece of land and she has Doberman Pinschers. On her gate, she has two bright yellow signs with two "dobies" on it and it reads: "I can get to the gate in 3 seconds, can you?" The message, at least to my mind, is, "I'm not really counting on anyone else but my dogs to keep us safe". Her thinking is based in reality. The police will do their best to reach her in an emergency, but it might not be enough. She's self-reliant.
