What do you think about having active shooter drills in school, especially elementary school?
Kids are being taught to deal with a rare and extremely scary event. And, because they’re children, they struggle to draw the line between fantasy and reality.
Make the enactment real enough and kids will be damaged emotionally and may end up with an anxiety disorder.
First responders and soldiers undergo intense preparation for such an event.
What good will it do an 8-year old to “train” once a month? They won’t remember that “training” when violence erupts. The focus needs to be elsewhere.
We need to put our efforts toward teaching the adults. The best protection is a secure campus including fencing, controlled entry and a well-trained, dedicated campus resource officer or police. That’s it.
Stop scaring the little people.
