Considering that 38 million Americans drink too much, the potential for a great many boys to end up with alcohol-related problems is real. Whereas those sons may drink less alcohol and may actually prefer water to alcohol, they were much more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol on muscle control and its ability to reduce their anxiety.
Alcohol can change father’s normal genes into genes that influence alcohol use in their son’s only. Surprisingly, daughters are not affected.
Of course, alcoholism is determined by more than parents’ genes. More than 50% of all children of alcoholics don’t develop problems.
Be mindful of your drinking. Be aware of your son’s alcohol use and vulnerability. Teach him what he needs to know.
