Teens between the ages of 13 and 16 who ramped up their marijuana use from occasionally to weekly or daily increased their risk of having psychotic experiences by a stunning 160%.
A huge study of 40000 13-year olds reported psychotic symptoms likely due to emerging depression. Psychotic experiences include hallucinations, feeling persecuted and having bizarre ideas.
These psychotic experiences started out infrequently, but year after year, they happened more often and were more intense, resulting in full-blown psychotic episodes or other psychiatric conditions.
While pot use is related to mental health symptoms and thinking problems, only the increase in depression explains the relationship between smoking weed and psychosis.
It’s important to keep your kids from using marijuana for as long as possible.
