The lifetime cost of treating a person with both autism and intellectual disabilities is $2.4 million. The autism component alone costs 1.4 million.
Few families have the resources to support their autistic children.
As for our country, the projected cost for all affected people is $461 billion, but this total could reach $1 trillion by 2025 if diagnoses continue to rise.
Schools as well as social services are lagging well behind the level of need and it will take many years for them to catch up.
Because early intervention is critical, there’s no time to waste and families are developing community-based programs on their own.
