Preschool attendance can predict your child’s reading competence in the 3rd grade.
Third grade is where kids stop learning the basics and start using their skills. They’re no longer learning to read; they’re reading to learn.
- If kids don’t attend preschool regularly, they don’t learn the hidden curriculum of school.
- They don’t learn how to get up, dress up and show up for their “job”.
- They don’t learn how to stand in line, share resources and work together with the teacher.
- If they have absences during the first month of any grade, that predicts their attendance for the school year.
Over 7 million US students miss nearly a month of school each year.
By 6th grade, chronic school absence predicts if your child will drop out in high school.
If your child has to be absent, the district must provide a teacher to keep them from falling behind. Make sure they get to school, on time and prepared to learn every single day.
