The right orbital frontal cortex allows us to have empathy, develop emotional give-and-take and is involved in the reward aspect of decision making.
When children don’t have the care they need for the first 3 years, they don’t develop healthy attachments to caregivers and reactive attachment disorder results.
It’s a relatively uncommon disorder, but is seen in abused and neglected children. They also experience problems with communication, social development, and cognitive ability which compromise performance in school, development of friendships and family relationships.
Children can be helped to develop social skills and treat the depression, but it’s a long and difficult process. Don’t give up!
