Researchers have discovered that the sandy areas and sandboxes in playgrounds are likely to contain serious bacteria including Clostridium difficile also known as C. diff.
These bacteria cause severe inflammation of the colon accompanied by serious diarrhea. It’s common and is found in all environments including most people’s intestines.
It’s when you’re being treated by antibiotics that C. diff can cause problems. If you’re young, old or have a compromised immune system, C. diff can be a threat. It can be fatal. Those with chronic C. diff undergo fecal transplants in order to recover.
Don’t keep Sam out of the playground, just make sure he cleans up well after playing.
Educate yourself about the symptoms so that if he starts to experience discomfort, you’ll be able to intervene right away. Early intervention, as always, is best.
