APD occurs with attentional deficits and language processing problems. It’s associated with low birth weight and difficulties during pregnancy and delivery. If Jacob had more than 5 ear infections before he was 2 years old, he is at risk for APD.
Get Jacob tested by a speech and language therapist or an audiologist. Fluid in the middle ear, even when there is no infection, can cause distortions in sounds. Kids who don't hear clearly, don't learn the sounds of language which can result in mispronunciations. Reading and writing can become seriously impacted, especially vocabulary development which is essential to academic and social success.
When speaking to Jacob, chunk your language into smaller parts, encourage him to ask for repetition and by ask him to repeat what he has heard.
Games like Simon Says require careful listening, but are fun, too. Dr. Seuss books use silly rhymes and word families to develop auditory processing skills. Speak and read to Jacob with a slower pace, but with natural tone and rhythm.
Don't wait! Claudia
