We all have secrets.
Even though they’re “just thoughts”, they weigh a ton and how much they burden you depends on the kind of secret it is.
If it’s shameful, it weighs more than guilty ones. If the secret will hurt or upset other people if revealed, it’s more serious and will weigh heavily.
Dark secrets cause guilt and shame which are self-conscious emotions. If you’re hiding because of unhappiness, trauma, illness, mental health problems, you’ll feel shame.
If you have a secret that would break trust with someone else or because of a lie, you’ll feel guilt.
The negative emotions caused by these feelings can be put to good use. Let them propel you to make changes in your life.
Shed your shame, jettison your guilt. Move toward an improved version of yourself. If you need help to do this, get it. Your secrets will eventually be exposed and there will be consequences.
