The medical profession is legendary for its hard workers, but seriously people, when you’re sick, stay home.
About 40% of healthcare workers report for duty when they have flu symptoms.
This is really dangerous for health care personnel who are working with older patients, younger patients and those with immune system problems. Patients who are exposed to a healthcare worker who’s sick are 5 times more likely to get that worker’s infection than other people.
Those who come to work, show up for multiple days while they’re actively experiencing symptoms.
Doctors and pharmacists were the worst offenders.
This problem is also linked to the hospital culture that promotes working despite being ill.
In order to change this culture, those healthcare staff who show up sick need to be sent home and still be paid. Many show up because they can’t afford to miss work.
