The problem was she took responsibility for Cameron’s tardiness and she was working harder than he was. If he’s not on time, it’s on him.
Drop him off at practice, let the coach know he wasn’t ready and apply the necessary consequences. This was so successful that she no longer shadowed him every morning for school.
Mom told the school counselor that she was turning over the responsibility to be on time to Cameron and that if detention or Saturday school were necessary, so be it. The counselor explained the new rules to Cameron and it was on.
It was ugly there for a while, but he quickly made the connection between his conduct and “real world consequences”. Mom was less exhausted from saving him from himself and their relationship was less tense.
Stop being invested in what other people think. Recruit other adults to spread the parenting around.
