I learned a lot about the D-Day Invasion from National Geographic's series, Drain the Oceans, which featured the battle on this season's opener called "Secrets of D-Day".
The Germans had amazing technology and they outnumbered the Allies, but lost nonetheless. Good triumphed over evil once again.
I've always wondered how my Navy sailor Dad ended up on the beach with soldiers and this episode answered it for me. It's likely the landing craft he was on was disabled, blown up or whatever and he had no choice but to get into the water and get onto the beach. He never spoke about it. His knee caps were badly damaged.
