I recommended that Momma give each teacher a Fast Facts about her girl. Here's what I used in 24 years of private practice. It worked great for my families and even for my own!
Want to know more about Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act? It's a quick read.
We talked about left-handed school supplies. Only 10% of the world's population is left-handed. Handedness is determined around the 8th week after conception. While it's not a choice, lots of people use both hands for different tasks. You can teach your brain and motor systems to work together to do just about anything!!
Being left-handed in a right-handed world isn't easy. More than 2500 people die every year from injuries sustained in using devices made for right-handed people. And yes, I know right-handed school supplies are not likely to kill you, so why make it tough for your left-handed kid? Just sayin'...Let's control the controllable.
Here are some overall resources for left-handed school supplies.
Teach Beside Me
Lefty's The Left-Hand Store
Since this kind of fine motor skill falls under the heading of the Occupational Therapy discipline, here's another resource. They've got so many items you didn't know you needed!!
Now, for specifics, check these out..
Computer keyboards and mouses (is it mice when you're talking about
digital parts??)
Notebooks (yeah, we "righties" don't have to balance our arms above that brutal spiral coil now, do we?) This is an amazon.com link that also features Lefty's The Left-Hand Store items.
There are many resources for left-handed pencils and assorted "assists" such as pencil grips.
Pencils and scissors were actually the first items that were tailored for left-handed students. Don't forget pencil sharpeners and pencil grips!
And pens! Oh, the pens! Maped makes a great left-handed ball point pen. They have a number of really great items for that 10%!
There are many pencil products on amazon, but I like this Stabilo product a lot. Stabilo is a dangerous site. They've got goodies of all kinds you can use to express yourself!!
When your child moves into middle school, their lives are run by their planner! Consider this planner/calendar. So helpful.
Think all rulers are the same? Just ask someone who's left-handed. Try this ruler for your left-handed loved ones.
Got little ones and you pack their lunch? Consider this kind of spoon/fork combo. However, at nearly $8 for the combo, I think I'd opt for plastic utensils. Sheesh. The kids will lose these pricey little products!
If you can't find anyone you like, contact Laura at Quaint Baby Bespoke Ultrasound Art. She does not allow you to send her the original ultrasound because she doesn't want to be responsible for such a precious item, so you'll have to send her a copy. This lawyer-turned artists does the work for about $125. I love this.
If you look through the gallery on her website, I like the one on the top row, farthest right (8a Baby Z). It impresses me as suggesting that baby has come to you from a far away, mystical place. It must be the black background with the stars. I think it will be the one I choose. I'll share it with you when the boys give it to me for Mother's Day. Hahaaa. They don't even know I want it yet!!
YOU'VE GOT PLENTY OF TIME BEFORE MOTHER'S DAY, SO GET ON IT!!! She's widely known and may have an extensive wait time.
OK, that's it for today! Make it a great one! See you next week on the radio!
