Research indicates that kids who are held back in elementary school are 60% less likely to graduate from high school. But why is this?
- Are academic, attentional or emotional problems interfering with her learning?
- Was he held back and the reasons for the lack of progress never explored?
More of the same isn’t going to help.
Before deciding to retain your child, request that the district conduct an assessment. Make the request in writing. They have to honor it without more interventions or delays and give you an assessment plan within 15 days of your request.
Just as ADHD medication is not a quick fix, neither is retention. If you retain your child, consider transferring them to another school to avoid the social “hit”.
Understand the risks and benefits before deciding.
