A very large genetics study revealed that people with schizophrenia use cannabis more than others. The study focused on how cannabis is being used by people with mental illness.
It was learned that 35 different genes are associated with cannabis use and abuse and some of these genes overlap with psychiatric disorders.
The study concluded that having schizophrenia leads to self-medication, but there is a reverse cause-and-effect relationship in that cannabis may actually contribute to the onset of the illness.
In some people, especially teens, smoking pot can set off a psychotic crisis.
If psychotic disorders, especially schizophrenia, are in your family history, educate your kids about the potential dangers associated with smoking pot or other cannabis use.
Teach them the warning signs of schizophrenia.
