Men are biologically at a disadvantage from the time they’re conceived. Two and a half more boys are conceived than girls, but because they succumb to prenatal infection or other problems in the womb, many are lost.
Men also take more risks than women. Accidents are the third leading cause of death for men. Men’s frontal lobes, which deal with risk calculation, develop more slowly than women.
Other protective/"survival" factors include:
- When compared to men, heart disease in women starts 10 years later because we’re protected by estrogen.
- Women’s strong social connections reduce our chances of dying early.
- We girls reach out for help while men just stuff their stress.
- Women outlive men by 10 years with the exception of married men who live longer and are healthier.
Help the men in your family lead healthier lives.
