You have the kids who grasp ideas fast and complete assignments quickly and correctly and then, you have those who work slowly and carefully, but still get it right.
Unfortunately, there’s only one speed in the classroom. If you work quickly, boredom sets in. If you work slowly, you get slammed for having late work and forever play catch up.
Because processing speed is a hard-wired phenomenon, you’ve got what you’ve got. Schools can accommodate slower processing speed with extra time on tests and extended time for those long-term assignments, but they can’t give extra time for the overall load of the middle and high school curriculum.
People with slower processing speed fare better in college where they don’t have to be at school all day and have a load of homework every night. Tell kids to hang on because school will get easier.
