Being poor affects your memory. Stress has a significant impact on memory skills.
People who can’t get their basic needs met have seriously impaired memory. For children, the situation is even worse. Poor kids living in both rural and urban settings have much lower visual and verbal memory ability than do kids from wealthier families.
The kids from an impoverished environment, like other kids, have no control over making it better. Their lack of control contributes to their stress.
Researchers also found that kids living in poverty in the city had lower memory scores than poor kids in a rural setting. City life is known to be more stressful than country life, so this is an additional stress factor.
This information has serious implications for educating poor kids in city schools. Help them build their memory skills so they can get a job and improve their lives.
