Well, this makes sense. Mothers buy gifts for their daughters and fathers buy gifts for their sons.
Does that mean that they favor one child over another? Yes, it does.
When it comes to wills, mothers leave more to their daughters, and fathers, to their sons. Mothers sign up daughters for raffles in order to benefit them. Fathers buy their sons lottery tickets. How does this impact them in later life?
Women who are in the position to give promotions may award them to women more than men. The same dynamic happens with men.
It’s unclear if this kind of gender bias influences decisions for college savings, politics and charitable giving, but it makes sense that it does.
We can correct this dynamic by making ourselves aware of our biases. This kind of favoritism is likely unintentional, but it causes problems, regardless.
Do you treat your children equally?
