There's really nothing new in the world. Things grow and change. What was once precious, is no longer valuable. The crib, the stroller, the car seat. You get the idea Such is the concept of "necessary losses".
If you find your college-student-to be acting even more petulant and surly than usual, don't automatically assume they are only anxious and excited. While that is part of the "mix", understand that they make a better adjustment to college if they "go away mad" instead of "going away sad". They are giving birth to the adult inside them and oh baby, is it screaming to get outta there!
I put both of my hands on his shoulders, looked him square in the face and said, "This place can be the key to your future; drive safely", hugged him and walked away. His Dad, on the other hand, gave him a Papa Bear hug and said, "We have confidence in you to make healthy decisions. Give it all you've got. Now, I'm going home to turn your room into my office". Falling down laughing...
Understand this. Even one day into this process, they will be changed forever. The world will never look the same to them or hold the same meaning. Give birth to this new part of you. Enjoy it. Don't forget that you're still growing and learning, too.
Do the best you can. TTFN, Claudia
