Follow his teacher’s lead. Prepare Max to listen to you.
Get his attention, introduce the topic and get right to the point without over-talking. He’ll trust you to note waste his time.
Connect the skills Max is learning to the ones he’s mastered. For example, when learning to assemble a model airplane, connect it to the sequence he uses to make a frozen pizza.
Get out the materials and follow the directions step-by-step. By connecting new skills to mastered skills, confidence is improved. A template, or recipe so to speak, is created.
This process reinforces the 3 Ps of prime, prompt and prepare. As kids move through life, this sequence will become automatic.
