Do their brains set them up for chronic and devastating pain long after their initial injury should have healed?
Is their discomfort the result of living with pain or the pain itself?
As it turns out, it’s a brain thing and two parts of the brain are involved. These two regions work together to create strong pain sensitivity. Unfortunately, these are the same regions involved in addiction.
Medical management of chronic pain can result in addiction to the medications.
If your child suffers a serious injury and continues to complain of chronic pain, it may be that they’re primed for pain and are at risk for becoming addicted to the medications prescribed to reduce their misery.
Don’t minimize their distress. Manage their pain wisely.
