Science continues to explore the effects of not getting enough sleep.
So far, we know that it contributes to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, but not getting enough sleep damages our mental health.
We lose our ability to have a positive mind when we’re tired. Why is this so important? Because the inability to think positively is a serious symptom of depression.
Humans tend toward noticing the positive things in our environment and sleep deprivation reverses that tendency.
People with chronic insomnia are less sensitive to the effects of sleep loss because they have more experience being sleep-deprived and may have developed better methods of coping with it.
It’s not all good news since insomniacs are three times more likely to report thoughts of suicide and death than those who get enough sleep.
Keep the kids off the cell phones to reduce depression and improve self-esteem and an overall sense of well-being. It matters.
