Ferbering is a progressive waiting method which is humane and helpful. Your mother says to let John cry himself to sleep, but can you really do that?
At 5-6 months, develop a soothing bedtime ritual and put John to bed while he is still awake. Leave the room; in 5 minutes, check on him. Don’t rock, pick him up or feed him. Leave the room and repeat every 10 minutes, increasing the time intervals. Unless John is a highly anxious boy, he will learn to sleep independently in a week or two.
One of every 6 fatal accidents is due to drowsy driving, Mom and Dad. Baby’s sleep patterns can be a hazard to your health.
Just do the best you can! Claudia
